Carmel in Hebrew means a beautiful fertile garden. Spiritually, it is the place free from distractions, like in the wilderness, where the soul seeks God, finds Him and serves Him.
In the mid-13th century, hermits lived on Mount Carmel with the Prophet Elijah and Mary as their contemplative ideals of following Jesus Christ. The Order spread to Europe but the Rule of life was relaxed. In the 16th century God ordained St. Teresa of Jesus in Spain to restore the Order and the first Discalced ("Reformed")
Carmel was born. Today the family of Carmel is spread throughout the world.
Our community in Canada was founded in 1992 when four nuns from the Hong Kong Carmel started the foundation in a small house in Markham, Ontario. Since then, more vocations were received into our community. God in His divine providence sent us generous friends and benefactors, and in 2006 a permanent Carmel was built at Zephyr, a small hamlet in the Township of Uxbridge, Ontario.
